Start a Wave to ask a question or open a discussion

Open the Flow, click Ask a Question (or pick another Wave type), add a title and details, and post it.

Last updated For: Members, Flow owners and admins

Before you start

  • You are a member of the Flow. The viewer role can read but cannot post.
  • Your profile type allows the Wave type you want. A Flow can limit which types each profile type may start and how many (for example, up to 10 questions).

Steps

  1. Open the Flow you want to post in.
  2. Click Ask a Question, or choose another Wave type if your role allows it. Only the types you are allowed to start are offered.
  3. Pick the type that fits: a question (gets a best answer), a discussion (open conversation), an announcement (one-to-many update, comments can be turned off), a session (scheduled or live meeting) or an opportunity such as a job or project people can apply to.
  4. Write a title that states the question in full, for example "How do I split a cohort into two time zones?" A complete question is easier to find later in search.
  5. Add details in the body. Type @ and start a name to mention a member; they get a notification.
  6. Add tags so people can filter and find the Wave.
  7. Choose who can see it: public to the Flow, limited, or invite only.
  8. Post. Members see it appear in the feed right away.

What happens after you post

Replies arrive in the Wave and you get a notification for each one. When a reply solves your question, mark it as the best answer so the next person finds it. Questions that get no activity for 14 days are archived automatically, and help requests after 72 hours, so the feed stays current. An AMA closes at the end time you set.

Troubleshooting

I do not see the button or the type I want

Your role or profile type does not allow it. Ask a Flow admin to change your profile type's permissions.

It says I reached my limit

Your profile type caps how many Waves you can start. A Flow admin can raise the limit.

My reply was not sent

Some Waves use slow mode, which asks you to wait (30 seconds by default) between messages. There is also a limit of 30 replies a minute per person.

My question disappeared from the feed

It was likely archived after 14 days without activity. Ask a moderator if it should be reopened.
