Moat profiles: one identity per member
Moat is the identity service behind Dium. Each member's name, photo, title and time zone come from their Moat profile and stay in sync.
What it does
Every Dium member has a Moat public key. It is the member's identity across Dium and sister products, even if their email changes.
Moat is the source of truth for display name and photo. Dium keeps a copy for speed and refreshes it at sign-in and whenever the member edits their profile on moat.page.
Location fields power the city shown in the member list and the member map. Time zone sets how session times and digests are shown.
What data moves
| Data | Direction | When |
|---|---|---|
| Name and photo | Moat to Dium | At sign-in and on every profile edit |
| Title, company, headline, links | Moat to Dium | At sign-in and on edit |
| City, country, time zone | Moat to Dium | At sign-in and on edit |
| Email change | Moat to Dium | Logged, not applied automatically |
| Account block after suspension | Dium to Moat | When Dium suspends an account |
What you need
- Nothing for members beyond signing in
- Partners sending profile data: a Moat cross-site key, issued by the Dium team
Setup
Member signs in
Dium looks up or creates the member's Moat profile at sign-in.
Member edits on Moat
Moat sends the change to Dium, which updates the name and photo and stores the rest.
Dium shows the latest
Member cards and author names use the Moat data, with a short cache so pages stay fast.
Troubleshooting
I changed my name on Moat but Dium shows the old one
Most changes arrive within minutes. Profile cards are cached for about five minutes. Sign out and in again if it still looks wrong.
I changed my email on Moat and nothing happened in Dium
On purpose. Email changes sent by webhook are logged but not applied, to prevent account takeover. Write to [email protected] to change it.
Why is my city shown?
The member list and map use the city on your Moat profile. Remove it on Moat to hide it in Dium.
